Aliyar Dam
Nehru opened this dam in 1962. There's a garden, an aquarium and a boating lake. Everyone stops here — and it's worth it.
Valparai · Western Ghats · Tamil Nadu
Valparai sits in the Anamalai hills above Pollachi, inside a tiger reserve, surrounded by estates that have been picking tea since the 1890s. It's quieter than Ooty, wetter than Kodaikanal, and most people still haven't heard of it.
The drive
Between Aliyar Dam and Valparai town, the road has forty hairpin bends, and every bend has a numbered signboard. People who've driven it once come back just for the road.

This is the view Valparai is famous for. You park, then walk about a kilometre uphill through the tea bushes of Nallamudi Estate. Then the ground drops away — a thousand feet down, with Anamudi, the tallest peak in South India, on the far side.

Wildlife
Valparai is a working tea district inside a tiger reserve. Animals cross the estate roads because they live there. That's a better way to see them than a jeep queue — but nobody can promise you a sighting.

Endemic to the Western Ghats. Valparai is the best place in the world to see one.

They cross the estate roads. Living here means giving way to them.

The largest wild cattle on earth, and completely unbothered by you.

You hear the wingbeat before you see the bird.
Best time to visit
Valparai sits at about 1,067 metres, so it stays mild while Coimbatore bakes. The catch is the monsoon, and we'll tell you straight if your dates fall in it.
Best
15 – 25 °C
Clear mornings, cold nights, the estates at their greenest after the rain. December and January book out first — ask early.
Quiet
up to 37 °C on the plains
Valparai stays mild while Coimbatore bakes. Fewer people, easier bookings, and the drive up is a relief.
Monsoon
wet and misty
The waterfalls are at full flow and the hills disappear into cloud. It's beautiful — but the bends get slippery, fog closes viewpoints and safaris are limited. We'll tell you honestly if your dates look risky.
Getting here
Our packages pick you up at Pollachi bus stand. Coimbatore Junction instead is ₹500 more per person, and we can meet you at the airport.
