Dam · 9 km from Valparai town
Nirar Dam
Small, close, and almost always empty of people.
Open 9 AM to 4 PM. Entry is ₹30 a head and ₹80 if you're carrying a camera. It's quiet, and the water is a surprisingly deep blue.
The place
Nirar is a modest reservoir a short drive from town, held between tea-covered slopes. It's nowhere near the scale of Sholayar, and it doesn't try to be. It's just a quiet stretch of water with almost nobody there — which is worth something on a plateau that gets busy at weekends.
Most itineraries fold it in alongside something else, rather than making a whole trip of it — it's close, and you don't need long there.
Before you go
As with any dam, this is controlled infrastructure. What's accessible and where you can stop is set on site and can change. Follow the signage and the staff.
