Tea estates on the Valparai plateau

Viewpoint · 15 km from Valparai town

Nallamudi Poonjolai

A kilometre uphill through tea, then the land drops straight down in front of you.

This is the view Valparai is famous for. You park, then walk about a kilometre uphill through the tea bushes of Nallamudi Estate. Then the ground drops away — a thousand feet down, with Anamudi, the tallest peak in South India, on the far side.

What you're actually looking at

Nallamudi Poonjolai sits at the western edge of the Valparai plateau. Here the tea ends and the land drops away into the Anamalai forest. On a clear morning you can see Anamudi across the valley — at 2,695 metres, it's the highest peak in India south of the Himalayas. The Eravikulam grasslands run below it.

This isn't a built-up viewpoint. There's no railing, no cafe, no viewing tower — just a grassy shoulder at the end of an estate path. That's part of what makes it worth the walk.

The walk

You drive to the edge of Nallamudi Estate, then walk the last stretch yourself — about a kilometre, uphill, on an estate track through waist-high tea. It's a steady climb, not a scramble. If you can manage a flight of stairs, you can manage this. It's not one for a wheelchair or a pushchair, though.

Give it forty minutes going up — you'll want to stop for photos. Wear shoes with some grip. That matters more than anything else you bring. The track is packed earth, and it stays wet for a day or two after rain.

When the view is actually there

Go early. As the day warms up, cloud fills the valley — by mid-morning, the thousand-foot drop can turn into a wall of white. Sunrise to about nine is your best window, and the light is best then too.

In heavy monsoon, the view can stay closed in for days. It's still worth the trip — watching cloud move through the tea is its own kind of beautiful. But if you're after the far ridge, come in the drier months and go at first light.

Practical notes

The path runs through a working tea estate. The estate or the forest department can close it at short notice. We check the day before, so you don't end up at a closed gate.

There's no shop, no toilet, and no reliable phone signal at the top. Carry water, and carry your rubbish back down with you. Stay on the path — the drop is unfenced, and the edge is grass, not rock.

At a glance

The practical bits.

Distance from Valparai town 15 km
Getting there By car to the estate edge, then about 1 km on foot
Effort Moderate uphill walk, roughly 30–40 minutes each way
Best time Sunrise to 9 AM, before the cloud comes up
Access Through a working estate — can be restricted at short notice
We check before we take you. Access on this plateau changes — estates close paths, the forest department closes gates, and the weather closes everything. We confirm the day before rather than driving you out to a barrier.

Asked often

Nallamudi Poonjolai, answered.

Can you drive all the way to the Nallamudi viewpoint?
No. The road ends at the edge of the estate. The last kilometre is on foot, uphill through the tea. There's no vehicle access to the viewpoint itself.
How long does Nallamudi Poonjolai take?
Allow two hours from Valparai town. That's the drive each way, plus 30 to 40 minutes of walking each direction, plus time at the top. Most itineraries pair it with something else in the same morning.
Is Nallamudi Poonjolai suitable for elderly parents or small children?
It depends more on the walk than the place. It's a steady uphill kilometre on an earth track — fine if you walk regularly, hard going if you can't manage stairs. Tell us who's coming, and we'll tell you honestly whether to include it.
