Day trip · 60 km from Valparai town
Athirappilly Falls
Kerala's widest waterfall, and a full day from the plateau.
Kerala's largest waterfall — eighty feet wide across a rock shelf, and huge in the monsoon. The forest road from Valparai to get there is half the reason to go.
The falls
Athirappilly drops across a broad rock shelf on the Chalakudy river, in dense forest on the Kerala side. It's wide rather than tall. When the flow is good, the noise and spray reach you well before the view does.
It's genuinely famous — plenty of film sequences have been shot here — so don't expect a quiet corner. Go for the scale of the water, not for solitude.
The trip from Valparai
This is a full day, not a morning. The route crosses into Kerala and runs through forest for a long stretch. The drive itself is a big part of what you're paying for and looking at.
We offer it as its own package rather than folding it into a Valparai day. Trying to do both is how people end up seeing neither one properly.
When to go
The falls are at their most powerful during and just after the monsoon — which is also when access to the lower viewpoint is most likely to be restricted for safety. In the drier months, the flow is gentler and you can get closer.
Access arrangements, and any restriction on the day, are Kerala's forest department's call — not ours to promise.
