Tea factory visit
The industry the whole plateau is built on, in one building.
Withering, rolling, oxidising, firing — spend an hour inside a working factory and you'll see why the tea up here tastes the way it does. Best arranged a day ahead.
Why it's worth an hour
Everything you've been photographing for two days — the contoured slopes, the estate roads, the towns — exists because of what happens inside these buildings. An hour in a working factory changes how you see the whole trip.
You follow the leaf through the whole process: withering troughs where it loses moisture, rolling machines that break down the leaf, oxidation, drying, then grading and sorting. It's loud, it smells amazing, and the size of the machinery surprises most people.
Practicalities
These are working factories, not visitor centres. Access depends on the estate, and on what the factory is doing that day. During a busy plucking period, they may not be able to take visitors at all.
Because of that, you need to arrange this in advance — you can't just turn up. Tell us if it matters to you, and we'll try to line it up for a day that works. We won't promise it in your itinerary and then find the door shut.
