Koolangal River
Clear water over round stones, two kilometres from town.
A shallow, pebble-bottomed river a short walk from town. This is where Valparai families go on a Sunday, and it's the safest water around for children.
The river
Koolangal runs shallow and clear over smooth round stones, with low green banks and trees closing over it in places. It's small, it's close to town, and it's the one stop on most Valparai itineraries that asks nothing of you.
Because it's shallow and you can see the bottom, it's where families with small children actually end up spending time — not at the dramatic waterfalls where nobody can get near the water.
Being sensible about it
A hill river responds to rain falling somewhere you can't even see. Levels can rise quickly, and the stones get slippery under moving water. Keep children within arm's reach, don't cross where the water is pushing, and get out if the level starts to change.
It's also someone's water catchment. Take your rubbish away with you, and don't use soap or shampoo in it.
